The Legendary: A Film about the Roots

Even though this blog is not much about Hip Hop, the connections are there. And, The Roots obviously, are a relevant contemporary group within the field of soul and funk. And as I want to bring you the good stuff; here's a recent documentary on them.

We all need a bit of Dilla

"Created in 2006, this remembrance piece is created as a tribute to the memory and legacy of James "J.Dilla" Yancey. This is a piece designed for his fans and supporters who knew of his accomplishments before February 2006 and those that have grown to appreciate his genius. Here, we gain a greater insight and understanding about our musical icon.
J.Dilla is Still Shining."

Mad Mats in the mix

Mad Mats was one of the first dj's that we booked back in the day when I first got involved in arranging clubs. This was back in 94', I believe, and we were really anxious to find out about the new stuff that was going during these pre-internet days. I clearly remember that he delivered, the place was on fire and our small-ish town experienced something never heard before. What struck me a few years later, was why the guy didn't get the recognition he deserved. Technical skills and a vast knowledge of all new and retro sounds, brasilian & latin music and such. Obviously it later took off with the Raw Fusion parties, the label and dj'ing.
So here you go - 2 hours of connecting the musical dots. Soulful, funky and futuristic.

J Dilla documentary

Stussy celebrates the legendary producer, this is the first part of three. There's some tee's as well. Check site for more info.

Update: I've seen some criticism on the making of this video, and I can fully agree on some points. If you think it's bad for commercial brands to capitalize on culture this way, there might still be some upsides as well. At the end of the day it can make these sort of cultural artefacts get the recognition it deserves.

When the funk hits the fan

"This amazing piece of sonic bliss, comes from the highly sought after Re-Member's Only album by King Britt presents SYLK130. We recorded this record live. This was before cd turntables. So we made the song, then the vinyl, then called jazzy jeff and de la soul to cut it live in the bassment of Studio 4 in Philly. History my friends! Unfortunately lost the super 8 tape!"
I don't get much into hip hop nowadays, but I certainly like my rap. And if you do you need to check this out.
This is ace, Jazzy Jeff kills the cuts! Get your download at FiveSixMedia.
